Refill was made to reduce the level of food and packaging waste generated by consumers. With the UK producing upwards of 10 billion tonnes of packaging waste a year, Refill provides a solution that brings a sustainable option to well known supermarkets.
Design a packaging system that reduces the emissions, food and material waste footprint of a range of supermarket products to zero. The system must be interchangeable at all UK supermarkets through their low-priced ‘signature brand’ as follows: Tesco (Everyday Value), Sainsbury’s (Basics), Asda (Smart Price), Morrison’s (Savers), Co-operative (Co-operative), Waitrose (Wait- rose), Aldi (e.g. Bramwells), Lidl (e.g. Batts) and Marks and Spencer (Simply).
During our research we found that it is common for people to reuse food containers in their home and in zero waste stores. We wanted to explore this further by developing a interchangeable lid system that fits onto a standardised jar size, allowing the user to customise the lid to the contents. We then wanted to bring the zero waste shopping experience into popular supermarkets with a dedicated isle for the refill jars.
An app can also be used to track the decrease of CO2 emissions when switching to the zero waste Refill alternative. To further reduce the CO2 footprint a long term plan could be to supply these basic essentials to the home using the Refill essentials truck.
